Newer Methods of CPR for Adults

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique to restart a person’s breathing when it has stopped. CPR can be used in situations such as heart attacks or near drowning. When the heart stops beating, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in as little as 8-10 minutes. Doing CPR, even if you’re untrained and clumsy, can keep that blood flowing from the heart to vital organs until experienced medical help arrives and can take over.

In days past, CPR was a combination of a series of chest compressions, and then checking the airway and doing a number of rescue breathes. Now, steady hands-only (no mouth/breaths) can be effective. The American Heart Association says not to be afraid. Doing hands-only CPR is easy for the untrained and can save lives.

Do 100 uninterrupted chest compressions a minute until paramedics arrive. When doing hands-only CPR on an adult, with the person on their back, straddle them without crushing them. The angle is what is important, so you want to be at an angle where you can place the heel of your hand on the center of their chest. You’ll then place your other hand on top of the first hand and compress. Compress means to push down. Remember the point of chest compression is to keep that blood circulating to all organs.

If you are trained in CPR or are working on a child, begin by checking their airway and doing rescue breathing. Rescue breathing is done by placing a hand behind the person’s neck and gently tilting the head back, so that you can open their mouth and ensure that nothing is blocking their airway. Switch between 30 chest compressions and 10 breaths. If you used to know how to do this but have gotten rusty, no worries; just do uninterrupted chest compressions.
